Around Town

We have had amazing warm weather this past weekend, I took full advantage of it by having my good friend, Lauren over for a visit.
The entire visit was spent outside walking up and down the main drag of Almonte; my new hometown.
The Mississippi river cuts right through the middle of this town, and I am lucky enough to have my backyard right beside it.

Our first stop was "Baker Bob's" where we picked up a dozen fresh dinner rolls, that tempted us the rest of our walk.
The next was at the "Superior Restaurant" a local eatery that is probably as old as this town. It's very small-town diner - old fake wood siding, a snack bar lined with older gentlemen discussing weather, sports and local news.
Lauren and I pulled up stools of our own, each with a coffee and had a good visit with the locals.

Our next stop was at the local butcher's "Don's meat market." I went to pick up an Easter ham my mother had ordered a few weeks earlier.
The shop is very simple, old glass fronted deli-counters show off Don's selection, including his notoriously delicious sausages. In woven baskets in front of the counter are onions, potatoes, garlic and other veg. Little handmade signs stick to the baskets proclaiming "I'm Canadian!"
It's nice knowing where your food is coming from! This same butcher also has a chalk-board sign hanging above the counter saying: "All men wanting special cuts of meat MUST have a note from their Wives."

I already know a lot of people here, despite the short amount of time I've been living here. There's the baker, the butcher, the head librarian and a few shop owners as well; that doesn't include the friendly people you just end up chatting with. ;)

I was so proud, I had a cyclist stop me on my walk back from the post office, asking where he could get a good cup of coffee and some food. Just like a local I pointed him in the right direction, I guess I'm starting to fit in here!

As soon as I grab some new batteries, I'll post some photos. I know I keep promising, but I will deliver!
